The MSBB is the premier youth big band of Auckland — a seventeen-piece jazz orchestra along with two vocalists, bringing the full power of five saxes, four trumpets, four trombones, and a driving rhythm section to every stage it plays.
The band features members from the National Youth Jazz Competition Big Band, the National Youth Orchestra, the KBB Honours Big Band and many more nationally regarded ensembles.
The MSBB exists to put talented high-school and university musicians in a room together and hand them professional-level material that actually demands everything they've got. The band is re-auditioned at the end of every year.
Led by Mike Sung, the band moves easily from the timeless swing of Basie and Ellington to bold contemporary big-band writing — always with the tight ensemble sound and standout soloists that make a live horn section unforgettable.
